A Meater that won't connect is usually the charger, the way the probe is buried, or a lid that blocks the radio. The app is rarely the mystery. Start with the dock next to the pit and the ceramic end of the probe in open air inside the cooker, because those two fixes cover most of the dropouts people blame on a dead probe.
Check the charger first
Plus uses a AAA dock as a Bluetooth booster. Maker figures are about 33 feet from probe to dock in open air, and about 165 feet from dock to phone. Pro uses a Bluetooth 5 charger, about 250 feet from charger to phone, and less of that through a kamado. Both designs assume the dock is near the cooker. A dock on the kitchen counter, with a kamado at the back fence, is the dropout.
The charger isn't fireproof. On the Pro it isn't waterproof either, so the dome and the rain are both bad homes for it. Next to the pit, in the dry, is the spot that keeps the booster close without cooking the dock.
Check the probe next
The sensors live toward the tip. The ceramic section is the antenna and, on these probes, the ambient side. If you push the ceramic into the flat, two things happen. The ambient number becomes another meat number, and the radio has to leave through a slab of beef plus the lid. Pull the probe back until the ceramic is in the pit, then close the lid and watch for a minute before you reinstall the app.
The lid is a wall
A Kamado Joe, which is what I cook on, is a ceramic shell. Steel offsets and pellet hoppers are their own kind of shield. The phone can sit on the lid in a product photo and still lose the probe in a real cooker. Stand on the hinge side, with the charger outside, before you decide the probe is dead.
If it drops every cook the moment the lid closes, the honest next tool is a wire. Meat thermometers for smoking includes FireBoard and Signals for that reason. Another wireless probe will meet the same wall.
The wrong dock looks like a dead probe
Plus and Pro probes do not interchange. A Pro probe does not fit a Plus charger. If you upgraded the probe and kept the old dock, it will not charge, and an uncharged probe will not connect. Match the pair. The spec split is on Meater Pro vs Meater Plus.
Wi-Fi will not save the single Pro
The single Meater Pro has no Wi-Fi in the probe or the charger. Duo and XL add it. Meater's line about unlimited range means a second phone running their link, not a cloud hop from the single charger. Walking to the store and expecting the graph to follow you is how people decide the probe "died at the stall." The stall is a normal pause in the meat. The missing graph is the radio. Read the brisket stall before you wrap because the app went quiet.
The cook you are trying to finish still needs a real pull temperature. Use brisket internal temp or internal temp for pulled pork, and an instant-read if the leave-in is the thing that failed. The brisket rub does not care which radio you use. The bark does care that you did not wrap early out of panic.
